Game Informer's servers crashed the moment the GTA 6 Game Informer cover story dropped. That tells you how big this is. The GTA 6 Game Informer issue 382 feature runs 14 pages of GTA 6 new details — exclusive developer interviews, fresh screenshots, and the deepest look at Leonida we've ever gotten. It's the biggest info dump since the Extended Look, and we read every page so you don't have to. Here's everything that matters, in one quick read.

GTA 6 New Details: Leonida Is the Biggest Map Rockstar Has Ever Built

The GTA 6 Leonida map is officially Rockstar's largest ever — roughly twice the size of GTA V, settling the GTA 6 map size debate for good. The state is split into six regions:

  • Vice City
  • Leonida Keys
  • Grassrivers
  • Port Gellhorn
  • Ambrosia
  • Mount Kalaga National Park

One notable absence: Central Florida's theme park corridor (Orlando, Disney World, Universal) and the Space Coast (Cape Canaveral, Kennedy Space Center) haven't been confirmed. Rockstar's Paul MacPherson explained the studio distills locations based on what "best works with and serves the game's needs," adding that "while we may not have those exact locations, everything we have is geared to getting that full Florida experience."

Rockstar's research wasn't desk work. The team took multiple trips to Miami and South Florida — riding with ex-cops at night, visiting strip clubs and nightclubs, spending time on the beach, in the Everglades, down in the Keys. Narrative SVP Rupert Humphries put it simply: "We are asking people to spend so much time in the world we are building, so we really need to understand what is great about it and then bake that into every aspect of the game."

Vice City is modern-day, not an '80s period piece — rebuilt and expanded well beyond what fans remember from the 2002 original. Rockstar art director Aaron Garbut sums up the vision in one line: "America dialed up to 11."

Expect traffic to matter. Vice City's roads are intentionally congested, and Rockstar notes that the tight, twisting freeways make police car chases a genuine challenge for players. The congestion isn't decoration — it's a gameplay system.

On the studio's approach to scale, Garbut adds: "Normally you compromise scale for detail or detail for interaction, but with this project we went the other way — everything is dialed up. Detail, scope, breadth, scale, interaction and density. I don't think we have ever created anything close to this before."

GTA 6 Weather System Is a Technical Leap

The GTA 6 weather system might be the quiet star of the issue. Weather is localized — it can be sunny where you're standing while a storm rolls in down the road. Rain leaves persistent puddles, and rainbows render realistically once the skies clear.

Tropical storms and hurricanes are confirmed, which tracks for a state modeled on Florida. Cloudscapes are dynamic, and the new wind system touches everything — hair, loose debris, ripples moving across water. Owen Shepherd told the magazine the team re-engineered weather from the ground up, and the screenshots make the case.

GTA 6 Wildlife: 170+ Species Across Leonida

Leonida is alive, and the issue puts a number on it: more than 170 animal species across the state.

  • 60+ bird species and 30+ mammals, plus fish, reptiles, and marine life
  • Confirmed standouts: manatees, flamingos, pelicans, and alligators
  • Invasive species made the list too: green iguana, feral cat, cane toad, and rhesus macaque
  • Rare, Discoverable, and Legendary animal tracking, RDR2-style
  • Simulated fur and bioluminescence for creatures that light up the dark

It's the most ambitious ecosystem Rockstar has built — and it's clearly leveraging everything the studio learned on Red Dead Redemption 2. Animal behavior, tracking tiers, simulated fur — this is RDR2's wildlife DNA applied to a modern open world.

GTA 6 Jason and Lucia: The Relationship System Explained

Jason and Lucia are GTA 6's dual protagonists, a Bonnie-and-Clyde robbery team with one locked-in rule: you can't break them up. Jason is an army vet working the Leonida Keys for local drug runners. Lucia is a recently released convict from Liberty City, trained to fight by her father. Their story kicks off when "an easy score goes wrong" and the pair gets pulled into a larger criminal conspiracy across Vice City and Leonida. How close they get is up to you.

You can play them as a platonic partnership or grow them into a romantic couple. Romance builds through small interactions — holding hands, answering each other's calls, accepting invitations. There are no gameplay benefits attached. It's pure roleplay, but your choices do shape story elements down the line.

GTA 6 Characters: The Full Confirmed Cast So Far

Jason and Lucia aren't the only names in the story. Game Informer's cover story confirmed a supporting cast that paints a much bigger picture of Leonida's criminal underworld:

  • Jason Duval — Army vet who grew up around criminals. Works for drug runners in the Leonida Keys and wants a fresh, lucrative start.
  • Lucia Caminos — Liberty City native trained in combat sports by her father. A mysterious family incident landed her in Leonida Penitentiary. Now she wants the good life — however she can get it.
  • Cal Hampton — Jason's goofy, conspiracy-theory-obsessed friend. Comic relief sidekick to the protagonists.
  • Dre'Quan Priest — Ambitious hustler working for the music label Only Raw Records.
  • Raul Bautista — A seasoned, charming bank robber who recruits Jason and Lucia as getaway drivers for a heist — kicking off a working relationship with the pair.
  • Boobie Ike — Vice City entrepreneur with dealings in real estate, music, and less-legal ventures. Reportedly at least partly inspired by Miami rapper Rick Ross.
  • Brian Heder — Veteran drug runner and one of the pair's primary mission givers. Lets Jason live rent-free in one of his properties in exchange for criminal work. Voiced by Stephen Root.
  • Real Dimez — Bae-Luxe and Roxy, a one-hit-wonder rap duo and high school friends trying to reignite their fame after an unknown controversy. Signed with Only Raw Records.

That's the confirmed roster. Rockstar hasn't shown everyone yet — expect more names to surface before November 19.

GTA 6 NPCs: The Most Detailed Citizens Rockstar Has Ever Built

Leonida's residents got a serious upgrade. NPCs now vary in height, body type, musculature, and even localized weight distribution. Skin details like freckles, moles, and tanning are visible. Rockstar paid close attention to culturally correct tattoo styles and ethnic hair representation, with region-specific fashion backed by realistic materials — garments, accessories, shoes, watches, sunglasses.

Rockstar has a dedicated team in LA writing NPC chatter, and the studio describes the effort as an "artist-driven push to make Leonida feel visually diverse and believable."

New GTA 6 Gameplay Systems: WAiNK, RydeMe, and the GTA 6 Heat System

Carjacking itself got deeper. Depending on the vehicle, you might steal it the old-fashioned way or need specialized tools. High-end cars come with sophisticated security systems and trackers — all revealed through WAiNK before you make your move.

The in-game phone does a lot of work this time:

  • WAiNK — scan any vehicle for security level, trackers, fence value, and the cost to register it as your personal vehicle before you touch it
  • RydeMe — an in-game ride-share app that doubles as a fast-travel system. Pick up passengers, chat with them on the ride, and get across the map fast
  • The GTA 6 Heat system — police gather intel from crime scenes based on your appearance and whereabouts, so changing your hairstyle, clothes, and vehicle becomes a real escape strategy. Splitting up can divide police attention if they know they're chasing a pair, though getting arrested still results in a "Busted" screen even if the other protagonist escapes

Missions are income-gated, so some jobs only open once your wallet clears a threshold. Snapmatic returns, and yes — your character can doomscroll on their phone like the rest of us.

More From the GTA 6 Game Informer Cover Story: Activities Confirmed

The side-content list reads like a Florida vacation brochure:

  • Base jumping
  • Billiards
  • Gyms
  • Kayaking
  • Mini golf
  • Scuba diving
  • Racing
  • Zoos
  • Air boating
  • Jet skiing

That's on top of the heists, the story, and everything Rockstar is still holding back.
